Call For Papers: Debut Panel
LGBT Theatre / ATHE

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Theatre Focus Group of the
Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites submissions for
its Debut Panel from scholars who have not yet presented at a national
conference. The deadline for submissions is February 25, 2008.

The theme for the 2008 ATHE Conference in Denver, Colorado, is "Difficult
Dialogues: Theatre and the Art of Engagement." How do theatre artists and
scholars engage in political, cultural, and artistic discussions about
gender and sexuality? How successfully are we engaged in multiple and
overlapping dialogues around issues of race, class, gender, geography,
religion, age, and disability? And what role can queer scholarship and
performance play in engaging our students, our audiences, and our
adversaries? Although we especially welcome papers on the conference
theme, all proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance will receive equal
consideration.

Both graduate students and faculty members are eligible to submit.
Submissions will be evaluated and selected for presentation by a jury of
theatre scholars: Dr. Bud Coleman (University of Colorado-Boulder), Dr.
Noreen Barnes (Virginia Commonwealth University), and Dr. John Fletcher
(Louisiana State University). Professor Coleman will participate as the
respondent during the panel session, and Professor Fletcher will serve as
chair.

Selection of papers is competitive. Authors of selected papers will
present them at the ATHE conference, which will be held July 31-August 3,
2008, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Denver, Colorado. All presenters must
register and pay the appropriate fees for the conference. Conference
presenters should be ATHE members unless they work outside the academic
study of theatre. For information on the conference (including applicable
costs), please visit http://www.athe.org/.

Papers should be an appropriate length for a 15- to 20-minute presentation
(approximately eight pages). Send four copies of your complete paper and a
cover sheet by February 25 to:

To maintain anonymity, please do not put your name on the paper. On the
cover sheet, include the title of your paper, your name, address,
telephone, and email address. Applicants will be informed of the judges'
decisions by 25 April 2008.

Questions or concerns can be directed to LGBT Conference Planner Dr. Jordan
