Religion & Theatre Focus Group
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) 2009 Conference

New York, August 8-11, 2009
“Risking Innovation”

The theme for the 2009 conference is “Risking Innovation.” Historically, religion has been at the
forefront of political revolution, not to mention cultural change. How have theatre and
performance coincided with religiously motivated innovation? What are the religious or spiritual
components of theatrical, artistic, cultural, political, linguistic, or economical innovation, and
what are their performative counterparts?

The religion and theatre focus group invites new scholars who have not yet presented at ATHE to
submit papers to the Emerging Scholars Panel that consider how religious and theatrical
innovation correspond and overlap. “Religion” and “theatre” may both be conceived broadly to
include spirituality, spiritual practice, religion as institution, the theological, drama,
performance, and performativity.

What does the phrase “religion and theatre” signify? What is its place in the academy and
education? How might “religion and theatre” function as a paradigm for historical or cultural
research or risk its own innovations in artistic, performance or spiritual practices? How might
religion or spirituality as a way of knowing/seeing create new understandings of what it means to
perform in and with a community?

Please send your one page abstract to Claire Blackstock at Include
your name, affiliation, the title of your paper, mailing address, phone number, and email address
with your submission, as well as a short bio. If applicable, please also specify what AV equipment
you will require. The deadline for abstracts is October 21, 2008. You can find out more about
ATHE at We look forward to your submission!
