New Approaches to Teaching the Emblem in Early Modern Courses

This proposed panel invites papers addressing ways to incorporate
emblems in courses on early modern literature, culture, art, and
history. Approaches may be methodological (e.g., what pedagogical
strategies have been successful?), technological (e.g., how have
presenters incorporated new media into their classroom teaching?),
practical (e.g., how might emblems from distant historical traditions be
made relevant to the modern university student?), or theoretical (e.g.,
are emblems being used as a means to an end [as contexts or
illustrations in historical surveys?] or are emblems taught as an end in
themselves [as a stand-alone course, or as units introducing
iconography, allegory, representation, etc]?). Case studies are welcome.
In his recent book, John Manning has persuasively argued that "One
cannot understate the variety as well as the pervasiveness of emblematic
modes of thought and expression during this period" (The Emblem [London:
Reaktion Books, 2002], p. 16). The proposed RSA panel will therefore
seek to sample how the tremendous variety of early modern emblem forms
is being explored in the 21st century classroom. Please send abstracts
