CALL FOR PAPERS: Haunting the Borders: the Gothic in Children's Literature

Editors: Anna Jackson and Lisa Scally, Victoria University of
Wellington, New Zealand, and Rod McGillis, University of Calgary,
Canada.

The editors are seeking proposals and contributions for an edited
collection of essays on works of children's literature that incorporate
gothic themes. The collection will focus on developments, transmutations
and traces of the classic gothic settings and motifs (macabre, fantastic
or supernatural events set among haunted castles, graveyards, ruins, or
romantically sublime landscapes) within children's literature rather
than on explicitly gothic works (such as the Goosebumps series). Areas
of interest include, but are not limited to, the house/castle; the
figure of the child; hauntings; instances of the uncanny; the uncovering
of secrets; issues of lineage and family; the grotesque. We welcome a
range of theoretical approaches, along with a range of children's, young
adult, fantasy and realistic, historical and contemporary fiction.
Essays on other aspects of youth culture including film, fashion, comics
and graphic novels, music, etc will also be considered. A publisher will
be sought from among academic and university presses.

Please send abstracts of no more than 750 words in Microsoft word
formant (.doc or .rtf) to Anna.Jackson_at_vuw.ac.nz by 1 April 2005, with
an anticipated deadline for completed papers of some time around the end
of August.
