CFP: Rethinking International Modernism (4/15/06; MMLA, 11/9/06-11/12/06)full name / name of organization: Harding, Desmond contact email: hardi1d@cmich.edu CFP for a proposed special session for the 2006 Midwest Modern Language The modernist epoch involved a global shift across a range of cultural, social, political, and economic contexts each marked in their own way by struggle and contradiction, ambiguity and anguish, renewal and faith. Recent theoretical debate has served to enrich our understanding of the differential cultural fronts of modernism, and yet the tendency of accepting a selective international modernism as the function of a Paris-Berlin-London-New York axis remains, for the most part, a critical commonplace. This session investigates the ways in which issues of region, of nation, and of location articulate anew the various interrelations, affiliations, and antitheses of modernity, modernism, and the modern. Please send 250-word abstracts (via e-mail attachment) by April 15 to hardi1d_at_cmich.edu: Desmond Harding, Department of English Language and Literature, Central Michigan University, Mount Pleasant, MI 48859: All participants must be members of the M/MLA at the time of the conference. http://www.uiowa.edu/~mmla/ ========================================================== cfp categories: travel_writing
