Kathy Acker, Transatlanticism and the Transnational

edited by Polina Mackay and Kathryn Nicol

Papers are invited for a new collection on the work of Kathy Acker,
addressing Acker’s work in relation to the transatlantic and the transnational.
Though most recognised as an exponent of American literary postmodernism, Kathy
Acker’s work consistently looks beyond the borders of the nation and raises
questions about the relationships between writing, nation, culture and power. In
particular, her writing displays an acute consciousness of systems of global
domination and exchange, and challenges any straightforward account of
literary cosmopolitanism. By locating Acker’s writing primarily through its
engagement with multiple literary traditions and histories, and crossing of
national, cultural and artistic boundaries, this collection will explore the ways in
which Acker’s work expands our understanding of global cultural exchange in
the contemporary world.

Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
Intersections with British, French and Spanish literature
Acker and travel writing
Acker and Algeria
Representations of Islam and the Arabic context
Empire and post-empire
Acker’s British journalism
Acker and international feminism
Acker and cosmopolitanism and/or globalisation

We also welcome more general essays that explore any conceptual aspect of
the collection.

Please send proposals (300 words) by Friday June 30th 2006 to
kate_edin_at_hotmail.com and polinamackay_at_aol.com. Final essays should be 4,000-6,000 words
and will be due 31st October 2006.
