Call for papers for a one-day conference

Theme: In Transit: Literature on the Move

We invite papers on any aspect of travel literature or on literary
representations of travel from any period.

One of the great literary travellers, Robinson Crusoe, set out from Hull:

"Had I now had the sense to have gone back to Hull, and have gone home, I
had been happy."

Travelling was intimately connected with the beginnings of the novel.
Knowing where you are or where you wanted to be has fascinated writers ever
since. In recent times, locations have become less stable. As travel has
become more available, has literature kept pace?

Topics might include, but are not restricted to, the following:

Migration, moving home, passing through, on the move

Modes of transportation, on the buses, night train, mail train,
mobilehomes, caravans, planes, cruise ships, ferries, buses, bicycles

Ports, airports, stations, bridges, the Underground, subways

Technologies of travel

Pilgrimage, perambulation, walking tours, rambling

Tourism

the Great Game, espionage

Orientalism, colonialism, empire

Exile, Refuge

Transculturation

Women travellers, travelling writers

Highways and byways, borderlands, islands

"Wherever I lay my hat."

Surfing, gliding, ballooning

Send by email a 250-300 word abstract for a twenty-minute paper, with your
