Writing Place, Placing Writing

Literature and literary studies have long acknowledged a significant relationship between the construction of narrative and the place in which narrative is constructed. Writers of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction find both inspiration and limitation, shaping forces, and restrictive forces, in local geography, culture, and environments natural and constructed. To address the complex interrelationship of literature and place, we invite proposals for papers (15-minute presentation limit), for a panel concerned with the relationship between writing/literature and landscape/place/environment.

Proposals are especially encouraged on the following topics.

* navigating the relationship between the natural, social, economic, political landscape/place/environment a writer works in and the process of writing

* landscape/place/environment, literature and identity

* pedagogical strategies in reading/writing the literature of landscape/place/environment

* negotiating the intersection of landscape/place/environment, textual representations of landscape/place/environment, and the writer's identity

* making use of landscape/place/environment as a lens to focus on/comprehend the writing process

* the influence of literary constructions of landscape/place/environment in specific genres: regional writing, nature poetry, travel writing

* the history of literary writing in and about landscape

* the writer as "other" and/or guide in landscape/place/environment

Proposals should be sent by March 15, 2007, to:
