Panel call for papers:

BACK TO THE LAND: MODERNISM AND RURAL GEOGRAPHIES

If one of modernism?s central ambivalences is about cosmopolitanism
and urbanism, then how do we view the modern rural? Historically, of
course, the early 20th century saw populations flocking to cities,
leaving rural communities culturally, economically and politically
impoverished. Arguably, the modern coincided with the moment that the
rural became primitivized, a space ?to be interpreted, protected, and
possessed,? as Rebecca Kneale Gould asserts.

We seek papers that explore any aspect of the rural as subaltern
during the modernist era. Possible topics include but are not limited
to:

Texts or images related to the early 20th century back-to-the-land movement
The primitivization of rural geographies in literature, art, or film
The urban modernist?s ?nature craze?
Gender or race in relation to agricultural life
The lives, representation or significance of domestic animals or plants
Farmland and economic development in relation to imperialism
Local rural traditions and possible oppositional value in
modernist/imperial context
