The Deadline for submissions has been extended to May 20.
We are seeking paper proposals for a panel entitled "Global Romance" to =
be held at the 2008 Renaissance Society of America Conference in =
Chicago, April 3-5. The panel will be sponsored by the Center for =
Renaissance and Baroque Studies at the University of Maryland, College =
Park, and is organized
by Professors Elizabeth Bearden and Gerard Passanante.=20

The romance genre with its vast geographical scope, diverse =
representations of cultural identity, and political, legal, and =
historical topicality, has
become a focus of critical interest. We hope to gather a group of papers =
that will represent the rich variety of work on this subject and that =
will speak
to the global or transnational aspects of early modern romance. How do =
the formal components of romance reflect global systems? How do =
romancers populate
their romance globes? How do romances both create and transcend =
vernaculars through composition and translation? Papers with a =
comparative approach are
especially encouraged.

Topics might address internationalism and interlace, political romance, =
romance Others, imperial topoi, romance readership and translation, =
romance, romance ecologies, the geography of romance, romance =
migrations, romance cosmopolitanism, romance rhetorics, the emblematics =
of romance.

Please, send an abstract of no more than 300 words with your name and =
affiliation to Elizabeth Bearden at the following email address no later =
than May
20. Please, do not attach the abstract; just include it in the body of =
your email.
