Reconstructing the Past, Constructing the Future: African American Poets and/in the Archive

CFP: I am seeing a presenter to round out a panel at the ALA African American Literature and
Culture Society Symposium, October 25-27, 2007, St. Louis University. This panel will explore
issues related to the preservation of African American poetry. Topics may include case studies of
individual poets or archives, problems of canonicity related to lack of access to poets’ work, gaps
in current scholarship, or successful examples of archival preservation. All of these issues are of
major importance to critics who feel the necessity of writing African American poets into the
canon. We also welcome critiques of this process and what motivates it.

Contact: Dr. Kathy Lou Schultz, klschltz_at_memphis.edu. Deadline: September 20, 2007.
