CFP: Conformism, Non-Conformism and Anti-Conformism in the Culture of the

Some contemporary U.S. authors, loosely known as post-scientific or
crack-pot realist (David Foster Wallace, William Vollmann, Jonathan Franzen,
Richard Powers and others) give a certain critique of postmodern writers
such as Thomas Pynchon, John Barth, Robert Coover, or Donald Barthelme. The
status of the earlier generation has changed from "non-conformist" to a
rather conformist one because of the institutionalization and
commodification of their works. This workshop welcomes papers dealing with
various aspects in the poetics of contemporary authors meant to reconsider,
re-write or "creatively" extend the poetics of the earlier generation.
Papers may also explore both generations' distrust of authority and its
manifestations vs. their need, and ways, to organize as well as disorganize
their fictional universe.

Deadline for proposals is September 1, 2005. Short abstracts (proposals) to
this workshop should be sent by e-mail to one of the addresses above, by
fax, or to:
