CFP: Evelyn Scott and Art. Sponsored by The Evelyn Scott Society

American Literature Association
17th Annual Conference
May 25-28, 2006
Hyatt Regency San Francisco, Embarcadero Center

In the twenty-five page preface to her novel, Bread and a Sword (1937),
Evelyn Scott examines the place of the artist in modern society. Scott
writes, “art expression, to be persuasive, must establish itself in terms of
a three-dimensional actuality-in a medium. This requires the cooperation of
sensation and of sense memories; for only with this cooperation can the
artist capture with illusion the senses of others” (xxii). The Scott society
encourages the submission of 100-200 word proposals addressing the question
of art in the works of Evelyn Scott.

The Evelyn Scott Society’s mission is to encourage the study and rediscovery
of this innovative American writer, and therefore, invites papers or
proposals for the Evelyn Scott panel at the 2006 American Literature
Associate Conference in San Francisco. Graduate student submissions are
especially encouraged. Submit your proposal or paper via email to:
ptyrer_at_mail.wtamu.edu Proposals may be typed directly into the body of the
email. Complete papers should be sent as MS Word attachments. Presenters
will be given twenty minutes to present their papers. Panel members must be
members of the Evelyn Scott Society by the date of the conference. Deadline
for submission of proposals is January 20, 2006. Notification of acceptance
will be mailed by January 25, 2006. By submitting a proposal, presenters
agree to register and to present their papers at the conference.

The American Literature Association’s 17th annual conference will meet at
the Hyatt Regency San Francisco in Embarcadero Center on May 25-28, 2006
(Thursday through Sunday of Memorial Day weekend). For further information,
please consult the ALA website at www.americanliterature.org or contact the
conference director, Professor Maria Karafilis of California State
University, Los Angeles at mkarafi_at_calstatela.edu with specific questions.
