SEMINAR CALL FOR PAPERS
British & European: The Poetry of Geoffrey Hill
Submissions accepted until March 1, 2006
With two new books of poetry in 2005, and Without Title in January 2006, Geoffrey Hill's muse seems to have swung back to themes of politics and the
British nation. Yet what makes his poetry so European? ESSE 2006 in London provides an opportunity to explore Hill's recent stylistic shifts. Speakers
are invited to discuss the British aspects of the work as they are focused and put in context by the poet's wider concern with the matter of Europe.
Proposals should focus on publications since Canaan or use the earlier poems and essays to interpret the recent works.
Please send your proposal to both convenors:
Jennifer Kilgore (University of Caen)
Jeffrey Wainwright (Manchester Metropolitan University) j.wainwright_at_mmu.ac.uk

If your proposal is accepted, you will be asked to submit an abstract by June 15th (4 pages or more). With your permission, the abstract will be posted
on The Geoffrey Hill Server, for consultation by other participants in the Seminar. You will also be asked for a 100-word summary of the topic to be
published on the ESSE conference website.
For the seminar, each participant will act as respondent to one other paper. The seminar session is limited to 2 hours and 6 presentations. During the
15 minutes allotted to each participant, there will be time for a short presentation (5 minutes) followed by comments from the respondent (5 minutes).
The remaining 5 minutes will provide time for debate and comments from all participants.
