Reframing Nella Larsen: Panel at the Northeast Modern Language Association Convention in Baltimore, March 1-4, 2007.

One of the Harlem Renaissance's most significant figures, Nella Larsen enjoyed both critical acclaim and popular success before being mired in a plagiarism scandal that hastened the demise of her literary career. Critical and biographical scholarship by Charles Larson, Cheryl Wall, Claudia Tate, Ann du Cille, and Thadious Davis rescued Larsen from literary obscurity; now, the recent publication of George Hutchinson's revisionist biography on Larsen invites us to renew previous conversations about her work and to begin new ones. For this panel, I seek papers from a variety of disciplinary perspectives that offer fresh readings of Larsen's texts--casting or further developing lines of inquiry into her life and work. I am particularly interested in analyses that are attentive to questions of racial "authenticity," gender and sexuality, cosmopolitanism, and aesthetics.
