CFP: Frances E. W. Harper in Context (09/15/06; NEMLA, 03/01/07-
03/04/07)

2007 NEMLA (Northeast MLA) convention
Baltimore, Maryland
March 1-4, 2007

Baltimore-born writer Frances Ellen Watkins Harper published her only
novel, _Iola Leroy_, when she was 67. It is probably the best-selling
novel by an African-American before the twentieth century. _Iola Leroy_,
however, came at the end of Harper's long and successful writing career
as a poet and journalist. This NEMLA Board-sponsored panel seeks
submissions on any aspect of Harper's work. Of special interest would be
papers that seek to contextualize her writings in a variety of ways: in
terms of her work in different genres; in terms of her activism; in
terms of her contemporaries; her influence on later writers, etc. Please
address inquiries and proposals (ca. 500 words) with a brief biography
by Sept. 15th, 2006 to Rita Bode, email: rbode_at_trentu.ca.
