African American Literature Symposium
"Catching the Flavor and Rhythm of Life: The Legacy of Zora Neale =
Hurston in the 21st Century"

North Carolina Central University's Department of English and Mass =
Communication will host its=20
Fourth African American Literature Symposium on Thursday, November 8, =
2007. This year's
theme is "Catching the Flavor and Rhythm of Life: The Legacy of Zora =
Neale Hurston in the 21st
Century." Hurston, often called the foremother of contemporary African =
American women=20
writers, is a true touchstone in African American Literature and her =
literary works have inspired
writers in the Americas and throughout the world. We are pleased to =
announce that
Dr. Mary Helen Washington, Professor of English at the University of =
Maryland, will be our
keynote speaker.

We invite presentation submissions on any aspect of Hurston, her =
literary works, and other=20
writers who possess Hurston's "flavor and rhythm of life."

Possible topics include but are not limited to the following:

Autobiography, Blues, Double Consciousness, Canonization, Class, =
Cultural Studies,=20
Ethnic Representation, Folklore, Gender Studies, Hurston's influence on =
other writers,
Identity, Film/TV Adaptation, Spirituality, The South, Vernacular =
Tradition, and Women's
Studies

Please submit a 250-300 word abstract and a brief CV by July 5, 2007 to =
each of the
symposium co-chairs. Graduate student submissions are welcome. Emailed
submissions preferred.
