On October 25, 2007 the Cartoon Research Library at the Ohio State
University, in collaboration with Project Narrative and the
Department of English, will host a one-day symposium on "Graphic
Storytelling: Academic Perspectives." The gathering will serve as a
prelude to the 2007 Festival of Cartoon Art, which runs from October
26-27, and which is this year devoted to "Graphic Storytelling" and a
celebration of the 100th birthday of Milton Caniff. For the first
time, the triennial Festival is sponsoring an academic pre-conference
in recognition of the exciting developments in academic comics
studies in recent years and the growing collaborations between comics
creators and scholars. We are soliciting papers for two panels:
"Graphic Narrative: Historical and Critical Perspectives" and
"Graphic Storytelling and Narrative Theory." The afternoon's events
will conclude with a keynote address on the life and work of Milton
Caniff by Dr. R. C. Harvey. A reception at 7:30 at the Thurber
Center will officially launch both the 9th Triennial Festival of
Cartoon Art and the Symposium on Multicultural Narratives and
Narrative Theory, hosted by Project Narrative.

To be considered for the panels, please send a 250-500 word abstract
and a one-page vita to Prof. Jared Gardner at gardner.236_at_osu.edu.
The deadline for abstracts is June 1, 2007. Please contact Prof.
