CALL FOR PROPOSALS
The First Biennial ASLE-UK Graduate Conference
‘Modern Environments: Contemporary Readings in Green Studies’

7-8 September 2007
The University of Glasgow

The Association for the Study of Literature and Environment (ASLE-UK) invites proposals for its First Biennial Graduate Conference, to be held 7-8 September 2007 at the University of Glasgow. Taking as our theme ‘Modern Environments: Contemporary Readings in Green Studies,’ we seek proposals for papers (20-minute presentation time), panels and roundtables that explore cultural responses to today’s environment. We welcome interdisciplinary approaches and readings of environmentally concerned creative fiction, poetry and non-fiction along with papers that engage with the environment from other disciplines within the arts and humanities. Proposals might focus on but are not limited to the following topics:

· Literature of Urban/Suburban Environments
· (Post)colonial Environments
· Eco-utopias and Dystopias
· Virtual Environments
· Biotechnology/ The Cyborg
· Environment in Film/Theatre
· Cultural Geographies
· Environmental Philosophy
· Environmental History
· Art and the Environment
· Science and Ecocriticism
· Globalisation and the Environment
· Literature of Working Environments (farms, ranches, forests, fisheries, etc.)
· Travel and Environment
· Weather in the Arts
· Pastoral Environments
· Environmental-Justice Activism, Literature, and Ecocriticism
· Class Issues and Considerations in Literature and Environment
· The Rhetoric of Nature and Environment in Science, Law, Business, and other Discourses outside the Humanities
· Theories of Space
· Representations of Rubbish/ Recycling
· Animals in Art and Literature

Please send proposals of 200 words for papers, panels or roundtables by 1 June 2007 to:

Please include a title, your institutional affiliation, and contact information. Pre-formed panels and roundtables are acceptable and encouraged. Preference will be given to graduate speakers, but proposals from established academics are also welcome. Audio-visual requests must accompany the proposal. All presenters must be ASLE members by the start of the conference.
