Call for Papers: Proposed Panel for MSA 9
Modernist Studies Association 9th Annual Conference (http://www.usc.edu/msa9)
November 1-4, 2007 in Long Beach, CA

"Modernist Dialectics of Ethics and Visuality"

This panel seeks new considerations of how modernism responded to
traffic between the ethical and the visual. While both ethics and the
visual have received renewed critical attention in recent years (in
modernist studies and beyond), these issues are rarely given a
sustained or direct treatment that examines them alongside one another
in order to understand how modernism addressed or was informed by a
dialectic between the two—how, for example, ethics pose
representational problems for modernists and, conversely, how the
visual in modernist aesthetics operates as a shaping force in the
construction and assessment of values, and, above all, how the ethical
informs the visual and vice versa.

Please send abstracts of 250-300 words along with a brief (2-3
sentences) biographical blurb that includes institutional affiliation
to george.phillips_at_uky.edu by April 6.
