"Rum, Sodomy and the Lash":
An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Symposium on Piracy
Friday July 13th, 2007
Graduate Centre University of Melbourne

"Rum, Sodomy and the Lash" is a one-day symposium organised by the
editors of antiTHESIS and postgraduates in the School of Culture and
Communication at the University of Melbourne.

To mark the creation of the new School of Culture and Communication,
which includes the areas of Cultural Studies, English Literary
Studies, Creative Writing, Cinema Studies, Art History, Theatre
Studies, and others, the symposium will bring together scholars across
disciplines for a day of debate and academic exchange.

Despite its negative representation in official histories, piracy
presents a site of contestation and alterity within an increasingly
rationalised and globalised modernity. We seek papers that explore the
idea of piracy in relation to the following themes:

• piracy and new media
• piracy and the state
• cultural representation of pirates
• copyright & intellectual property
• plagiarism, literary appropriation and allusion
• musical piracy
• terrorism and piracy
• immigration, liminality and piracy
• maps, geography and exploration
• treasure and trade
• piracy, gender and sexuality
• and other related creative submissions

Proposals of no more than 250 words are sought for 20 minutes papers
addressing the theme of piracy. Please send abstracts in the text of
an email to editor.antithesis_at_gmail.com by Friday, May 18th, 2007.

Submissions can include:
• an individual paper
• a jointly authored paper
• session proposals
• and creative/media presentations

All submissions should include:
• a title
• a 250-word abstract or sample if a creative piece
• a list of three keywords relating to the proposal
• a brief biography
• and details of audiovisual requirements

Presenters are encouraged to develop their papers for submission to
volume 18 of the fully-refereed antiTHESIS, Australia's
longest-running interdisciplinary postgraduate journal.
