Rumer Godden Centenary Symposium

Saturday 1st December 2007

King’s College, University of Cambridge (Faculty of English)

During her lifetime (1907-1998) Rumer Godden published over 60 books in a
range of genres, yet her contribution to English literature remains
absent in literary criticism. Held in the year of Rumer Godden’s
centenary, this symposium aims to re-evaluate, and celebrate, the work of
this prolific twentieth-century writer. Approaching Godden from a more
critical perspective in an attempt to reintegrate Godden into literary
studies, this symposium hopes to demonstrate that beneath the stylish
veneer of Godden’s work was a political writer making informed judgments
on the society that she was part of.

Topics may include, but are not limited to:

• Gender
• Race
• Class
• Film adaptations of Godden’s work
• Nature
• Representations of ‘space’
• Identity
• Exile
• Children’s literature
• Wartime writing

Proposals of 300 words, along with a short biography, should be e-mailed
to Lucy Le-Guilcher at <lal29_at_cam.ac.uk>

Deadline: 31st August 2007
