39th Convention, Northeast Modern Language Association (NeMLA)
April 10-13, 2008
Buffalo, New York

Panel: “Traveling Bodies: The Physical Experience of Dislocation in
20th-Century Literature and Film”

This NeMLA panel is concerned with representations of the traveling body
and with the epistemological effects of travel. It welcomes papers that
investigate literary and filmic depictions of physical travel that go
beyond its purely visual aspects, to include such visceral concerns as
consumption, sensuality, illness, physical danger, sexual contact, and

How have 20th-century writers and filmmakers depicted the traveling body?
What do their real and fictional travelers think and feel when they
explore unknown territory? How are those thoughts and feelings related to
their physical vulnerability? What kinds of insight result from physical
travel, and how are they different from those springing from "mental
journeys"? What does it mean, ultimately, to make a journey?

These questions represent only a few of the possible approaches to the
topic. Theoretical explications of relations between the traveling body
and knowledge are of course also welcome.
