Call for Papers: Starships: Science Fiction and Fantasy Area, SW/TX
The 2008 Southwest/Texas Popular Culture/American Culture Association
29th Annual Conference, The Hyatt Regency Conference Hotel, Albuquerque,
NM, February 13-16, 2008.
The Area Chairs of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Area would like to
invite paper and panel proposals on starships in Science Fiction and
Fantasy. These could include, but are not limited to, the following:
â€¢ starships as tools
â€¢ starships as psychological spaces
â€¢ starships as iconography
â€¢ starships and marketing
â€¢ starships and community
â€¢ starships and evolution and/or posthumanism
â€¢ starships as personalities/characters
â€¢ and etc.
Please send queries, 250 word paper proposals, or 500 word panel

Include with the submission full contact information for each presenter
including email, phone, snail mail, and institutional affiliation.
Deadline for proposal submissions: November 15, 2007. The registration
deadline is December 31, 2007. All participants must register by that
date or they will not be permitted to present or appear in the program.

More about the SF&F Area
The Area was founded in 1995 by Prof. Richard Tuerk of the Texas A&M
University-Commerce (Formerly East Texas State University) and author of
Oz in Perspective (McFarland, 2007). The Area is currently chaired by
Ximena Gallardo C. of the City University of New York-LaGuardia and co-
author of Alien Woman: The Making of Lt. Ellen Ripley (Continuum: 2004),
Allyson Buckman of the California State University-Sacramento, and C.
Jason Smith of the City University of New York LaGuardia. Though the
three co-chairs consult on submissions, Ximena is primarily responsible
for the organization of the conference panels and the review of papers
that are not responding to one of the special topics CFPs, Alyson
coordinates the Whedonverse panels (Buffy, Firefly, Angel, and etc.), and
Jason coordinates special panels on current â€œhotâ€ topics or whatever else
he is obsessed with this year.
With an average of 70+ presenters annually, The Science Fiction and
Fantasy Area of the Southwest and Texas Popular Culture and American
Culture Association is one of the most dynamic and well attended areas at
the conference. Numerous book and article publications have originated
from our panels.

Make travel plans now for the 2008 annual meeting of the Southwest Texas
Popular/American Culture Association as we meet in Albuquerque, New
Mexico. Our hard working area chairs and staff have been busy since our
February meeting preparing for another outstanding conference. We
cordially invite you to join us in 2008 as this premier event takes place
in the beautiful Land of Enchantment.
2008 Conference Highlights include the following:
â€¢ â€œEarly Birdâ€ online registration will begin June 1, 2007 for
those whose paper/panel presentations have been accepted by their
respective area chairs. We ask that you limit your submissions to one
paper or panel.
â€¢ For 2008 we have added twelve new exciting subject areas
increasing our focus on cutting edge Popular/American culture studies.
â€¢ We encourage all participants to register and book hotel
reservations at your earliest convenience. Complete hotel reservation
information will be available online June 1, 2007.
â€¢ AV support for 2008 includes wireless computer access in Phil's
Cyber CafÃ©, and by popular demand, each presentation room will be
equipped with the following:

DVD/VCR Combo Player
Set of Stereo Speakers
Large Projection Screen
Bring your computer laptop to the conference, so you can check take
advantage of the LCD projector and cyber cafe.
