Looking for 1-2 papers to fill a panel for a proposed special session at
the American Literature Association annual conference in San Francisco
over Memorial Day weekend.

“Literature in George W. Bush’s America” hopes to begin a discussion of
how American literature has responded to the highly charged social and
political climate during the years of the current Bush administration.

The polarization of the nation into “red” and “blue” states; the
controversial election of 2000 and suspected disenfranchisement of
voters; the attacks of 9/11 and their individual and collective impact;
the “war on terror”; the status of civil rights in the wake of the
Patriot Act; America’s international reputation; tourture, Guantanamo
Bay, and Abu Grahib; the largely successful squelching of dissent; the
mainstreaming of neo-conservative ideology; military actions in
Afghanistan and Iraq; the outspoken religions views of the President and
the increased influence of religious agendas in national politics; the
rise of FOX News; the scandals at Enron and other corporations;
environmental concerns: these are only some of the factors that have
influenced America and American identity over the past several years.

This panel will discuss the literary responses to these events and
explore how they are shaping American literature in the 21st century.
