European Journal of American Culture: New Perspectives on the Modernist
Transatlantic

Essays are sought for a special issue of the European Journal of American
Culture investigating new perspectives on the cultures of the modernist
transatlantic. As Malcolm Bradbury observed, this moment was marked by “a
vast transformation not just in artistic history but in the very balance
of cultural power,” but has also often been obscured by a tendency
towards a “romantic and stylish history of events.” Recently, however,
work on the ethics of modernist transatlanticism, the intersection of
cultural studies and modernist studies, and on the Black Atlantic and
modernism has rejuvenated this area of study. Essays which employ these
methodologies are particularly welcome, as are considerations of popular
and/or visual culture in the modernist transatlantic, essays on the
economics of the transatlantic culture industry, or the transatlantic
cultural relations of war.

Essays should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words long, referenced in
Harvard style, and submitted by 15th December 2008. All papers and
queries should be addressed to Mark Whalan at m.whalan_at_exeter.ac.uk
