Critics (Huyssen, Alter, Lehan, Kern, among others) have argued that literary experimentation is
central to the modernist project of representing the city. At the turn of the twenty-first century, the
tensions that drove modernist texts—class disparities, global exchange and communication, and
chance encounters—have only exponentially increased. How are contemporary literary and artistic
interpretations of the city reinventing this familiar modernist trope? International examples are
welcome. Papers that address hypertext, internet, or multimedia projects are especially
encouraged. Please send 500-word abstracts to Martha Kuhlman by Sept 10th 2008,
