The E. E. Cummings Society and the Society’s journal, Spring, invite abstracts for 20- minute
papers for the 37th annual Louisville Conference on Literature and Culture since 1900, February
19-21, 2009, at the University of Louisville. Recent Cummings studies have increasingly
illuminated the often underestimated poet-painter’s poetic contributions to modernist
experimentalism—radical typography and generic play through the verbal and visual space of
language—as not mere aesthetic effrontery, but as important cultural signification in its own
right. Considering the complexity of Cummings’ modernist re-imaginings of genre in all of its
manifestations (from the lyric to prose non/fiction and stage plays), along with his transgressions
of formal boundaries (including metrics and rhyme), we invite papers that reexamine Cummings’
modernist gestures that point beyond iconoclastic modernism and re-engage cultural realities.
Papers on the reception of Cummings and on Cummings’ relations to other writers are also
welcome.

Please send 250-300 word abstracts (double-spaced and titled) postmarked no later than
September 20th, 2008 to:
