TRAUMA FUNDAMENTALISM:
PSYCHO-TRAUMATOLOGICAL AND TEXTUAL APPROACHES TO AN INTERDISCIPLINARY NOSOLOGY

An International Conference
17-19 June 2009
TO BE HELD AT:
ENGLISCHES SEMINAR, WESTFÄLISCHE WILHELMS-UNIVERSITÄT MÜNSTER, GERMANY

IN COOPERATION WITH
INSTITUT FÃœR GESCHICHTE DER MEDIZIN, HEIDELBERG, GERMANY
INSTITUT FÃœR ANGLOPHONE STUDIEN, DUISBURG-ESSEN, GERMANY

Fundamentalism has become one of the major issues in modern life. As a
global phenomenon which affects practically all nations and cultures, its
consequences and reverberations are likewise felt world-wide. The
phenomenology of fundamentalism is complex, protean and multi-layered;
hence it is an obvious case where interdisciplinary approaches are called for.
This conference takes up this interdisciplinary agenda. It proposes to
approach fundamentalism from a specific and at the same time expansive
angle by relating fundamentalism to the study of trauma across the fields
of psychological and traumatological scholarship on the one hand and
literary and cultural studies on the other. In both of these fields of
research, trauma has been a major concept of continually expanding
scholarly relevance. Using the ongoing productiveness of interdisciplinary
research on trauma, this conference will follow two principal questions:
1. In how far can the concept of trauma bring new insight to the
understanding of the causes and contexts of fundamentalist phenomena and
their further analysis?
2. In how far can traumatology and literary / cultural negotiations of
trauma help in understanding and dealing with pathological consequences
arising from the impact of and experiences with fundamentalism?
Papers are invited from across the relevant disciplines, including
traumatology, psychology, psychiatry, medical history as well as literary
and cultural studies.

To submit a proposal, send an abstract of about 300 words, preferably by
email attachment, to the contact address. Deadline for submissions: 30
April 2009.
