CFP: [Victorian] Art, Education, and Nationalism for MLA 2008

We are seeking paper proposals for a panel on nineteenth-century education
in the arts and its connections to English nationalism and/or British
imperialism at the 2008 MLA conference in San Francisco. Potential topics
could include but are not limited to the development of schools in the
“industrial arts”; the construction of a history of English art; the place
of art and literature in a modern university education in Britain and the
colonies; the adult education movement and the arts; the role of drawing in
formal and informal education; the role of British literature and art in
educating colonial subjects and/or imperialists; state-sponsored
initiatives in educating English or imperial subjects; and the
dissemination of education through mass media. Paper abstracts should be
no more than 250 words and should be emailed by March 14, 2008 to
Sheshalatha Reddy at sreddyz_at_umich.edu. Please feel free to contact me
