Panel Topic: Transatlantic Womanhood in the 19th Century

The 19th century included significant shifts in both the political reality
and literary manifestations of womanhood: On the heels of first wave
feminism the “New Woman” arose to challenge the cult of “True Womanhood,”
and suffragettes across the Atlantic communicated actively in their quest
for full citizenship. Papers for this panel should explore the ways in
which these changes occurred within/amidst an active Transatlantic
exchange. How did authors engage with the Transatlantic world in their
depictions of women? What economic and cultural differences lead to
variations in U.S. and British representations of femininity? How do the
anxieties surrounding shifting gender ideologies manifest
similarly/distinctly in Transatlantic texts? Are authors actively seeking
and exploring these issues from a Transnational perspective?
