Call for Papers

Papers are sought for the following panel:

Designing the Self: Life-Writing in Nineteenth-Century Britain

Drawing on the conference theme of “Design,” this panel seeks to examine
ways in which authors craft identities (either their own or others’)
through life-writing, including autobiography, biography, letters, or
journals. Papers may consider how writers respond to societal, political,
and/or literary influences by illuminating the interaction between writer
and culture as it informs or shapes the written self. Additionally,
papers may investigate the means by which, especially in autobiography or
biography, authors design lives to fit a pattern to create a specific self-
image, one that may be at odds with historical record.

Please send your name, institutional affiliation, and abstract of 500
words (or less) to Ken A. Bugajski <> by October 10,
