CFP: [Victorian] Panel: Minding Animals: Companion Species in Victorian Literature
PANEL: Minding Animals: Companion Species in Victorian Literature
CONFERENCE: Minding Animals-2009 International Academic and Community Conference on
Animals and Society, University of Newcastle, NSW Australia 13-18 July 2009
This transdisciplinary conference will bring together animal theorists and scientists from a broad
range of academic disciplines, including some of the founders of the modern animals movement.
Understandings about the representation of animals has shifted in radical new directions over the
last ten years, as animals come to bear different meanings
in Western culture. This panel is
interested in papers exploring the ways in which the experiences of humans and those animals we
think of as domestic are figured in Victorian literature. Papers that seek to interrogate animal-
human encounters from a theoretically informed perspective are especially welcome.
