CFP: [Victorian] Pater and Cosmopolitanism
The Pater Newsletter seeks essays for a special issue on "Pater and Cosmopolitanism." In â€œMr.
George Moore as an Art Criticâ€ (1893), Pater asserts that â€œthe genius of Ingres is cosmopolitan, like
that of those old Greek artists,â€ then goes on to explain why â€œa certain cosmopolitanism [is], in
truth, an element of national character.â€ Essays that explore the implications of cosmopolitanism
for literary, aesthetic, mythic, historical, national, political and/ or cultural work in a Paterian
context are invited. Essays should be approximately 2500-3000 words. Each submission should
include a title page identifying your name and institutional address; the essay, which should not
include any identifying markers; and a 200-word abstract.
Extended eadline for submissions: 15 January 2009.
