Call for Papers:
Puppetry International magazine seeks articles for the peer-reviewed section of our upcoming issue (#26), the theme of which is Shadow Puppetry. We are looking for brief essays (2,000 words, including notes and bibliography) about any form of theatre that employs shadows, whether cast by humans, objects, or designed shadow figures, both contemporary and traditional. We seek articles that address topics such as the following: what are the performance implications of mixing shadow figures and humans? What special issues are germane to the design and manipulation of shadow puppets? How do such puppets play a part in community cohesion or change? What are new movements and innovations in the world of shadows -- including technology? We also seek interviews with (or profiles of) contemporary artists outside the traditional scope of puppetry who use shadows or shadow puppetry techniques. Articles for the peer-reviewed section of Puppetry International should demonstrate rigorous scholarly research and analysis, but also appeal to PI’s wide audience.

Puppetry International is the bi-annual publication of UNIMA-USA, the United States chapter of the Union Internationale de la Marionette, the world’s oldest theatre organization. Each issue explores a different theme; recent issues have addressed puppetry’s relationship to text, dance, opera, spirituality, sexuality, and propaganda. We initiated a peer-reviewed section of the magazine in 2007 in order to encourage more scholarly writing about puppets and related performance forms.

Submission deadline for peer review: July 1, 2009.
General submissions (no peer review) due August 1, 2009.

Please send essays as Microsoft Word attachments in RTF format to John Bell (john.bell.puppeteer@gmail.com) and to Andrew Periale (ab2periale@metrocast.net). In order to ensure blind review, please include your name, contact information and a brief biography on a separate cover page. Use of images is encouraged (300 dpi). Submissions should be in MLA format.

Contributors will receive a copy of the magazine and retain the copyright to their work; minor publication expenses can be covered as well.

The possibility exists for publication of a longer version of an article (as well as bibliography, additional images, etc.) on our website.
