Call for Papers
17th International James Fenimore Cooper Conference and Seminar
SUNY, Oneonta
July 12-17, 2009

"Global Cooper"
James Fenimore Cooper's reputation rests firmly in his achievement as a writer of the American wilderness and frontier mythmaker through his Leatherstocking tales. Yet Cooper was the first American author of international standing and with international concerns. His seven-year sojourn in Europe resulted in several volumes of travel writing and numerous novels and stories with European settings (The Bravo, The Headsman, The Heidenmauer, "Autobiography of a Pocket Handkerchief," among others). Through his ties to the Marquis de LaFayette, Cooper became personally involved in European politics, as well. Cooper's engagements in Europe influenced his understanding of domestic American politics and had repercussions on his standing at home. 2009's Cooper conference seeks papers that explore the role of Cooper's international travels on his thought and writings, as well as his reputation on both the American and international stages. Paper and presentation topics may include, but are not limited to:

Cooper's European Novels
Cooper's reception in Europe
American nativist responses to Cooper's European travels
Cooper, Europe, and the Press
Cooper's involvement in European politics
The influence of Europe on Cooper's republican outlook
The influence of Europe on Cooper's sense of landscape
Cooper's influence on writers internationally
Cooper's current standing among international scholars

We are, of course, happy to consider any proposals that address Cooper's works and his time.

Papers should be 8-10 pages in length (20 minute presentations). Send proposals via e-mail to:
