Hanrahan/Hawthorne Society contact email: hhanraha@shepherd.edu CALL FOR PAPERS "Hawthorne and Twentieth/Twenty-First Century Writers" We invite proposals that consider how writers from the 20th and 21st centuries respond to, critique, subvert, or rewrite Nathaniel Hawthorne. Possible questions to consider include: How do modern writers examine the same questions about morality, human nature, gender, science, individualism, and community that occupy Hawthorne in his fiction? How do memorable characters like Hester Prynne, Young Goodman Brown, Rappaccini and others reappear in different ways in these literary and/or cinematic texts?
