"Hawthorne and Twentieth/Twenty-First Century Writers"
Sponsored by the Hawthorne Society (Affiliated Group Session)

We invite proposals that consider how writers from the 20th and 21st centuries respond to, critique, subvert, or rewrite Nathaniel Hawthorne. Possible questions to consider include: How do modern writers examine the same questions about morality, human nature, gender, science, individualism, and community that occupy Hawthorne in his fiction? How do memorable characters like Hester Prynne, Young Goodman Brown, Rappaccini and others reappear in different ways in these literary and/or cinematic texts? By April 15, please send 250 word abstracts to Heidi Hanrahan, Shepherd University, at hhanraha@shepherd.edu.
