1) CHARLES W. CHESNUTT AND HUMAN RIGHTS---
Papers welcome on any aspect of Chesnutt's connections to human rights.

Topics might include: Chesnutt and Civil Rights; the nature of justice in Chesnutt's fiction; legal versus ethical rights in Chesnutt; Chesnutt's representation of human needs, as potentially different from rights; Using Chesnutt's work to teach human rights; philosophical or theoretical dimensions of being human in Chesnutt's work; Chesnutt's strategies of
opposition/resistance to repressive institutions; narrative structure and political engagement in Chesnutt's fiction.

Please submit an abstract electronically within an email or as an
attachment to BOTH Susanna Ashton and Bill Hardwig (sashton@clemson.edu and whardwig@utk.edu). Please include your contact details and institutional affiliation, if any. The deadline for submissions is June 26th, 2009.

2) CHESNUTT OPEN SESSION (open topic but papers concerning
Chesnutt's non-fiction especially welcome)....
