CFP: Local Popular Culture area at MAPACA (6/15/07; MAPACA, 11/2/07-11/4/07)

full name / name of organization:
Annalisa Castaldo

The Mid-Atlantic Popular/American Culture Association is requesting papers for a new area: Local Popular Culture.

This new area invites panels and individual papers addressing the relationship between locality (place, space, region) and popular culture in any of its multiple forms, genres and practices. A wide range of topics will be considered, from empirical studies of particular local scenes and cultural practices, past or present, in North America and elsewhere, to more general or theoretical perspectives on the shifting relationships among popular culture practices, locality, identity, national and transnational culture.

For the 2007 conference, panels that address Philadelphia are especially sought after. Papers and panels may include (but are certainly not limited to):

*Philadelphia as history
*Films set in Phildelphia
*The culture of Philadephia
*Specific areas or cultures within Philadelphia
*Local legend and lore
*Perceptions of Philadelphia elsewhere

Please send a 250 word abstract, with contact information and av requests, to Annalisa Castaldo at
