Allegory: Theories and Forms between Middle Age and Modernity

The notion of allegory is a pivotal one to understand Western literature, either the medieval one by which allegory was institutionalized within the four layers system of textual hermeneutics (literal, moral, allegorical, and anagogical), or in the modern texts which have been often interpreted, at least from Benjamin forward, as allegorical texts.

Between these two phases – say, medieval and modern – it is possible to glimpse a considerable gap in the theoretical systematization of allegory. If in the middle age allegory was strictly coded, if considered both as a rhetorical figure and as part of a more general hermeneutical path going from the text to the world, on the other hand, after some centuries of decline, modernity saw a kind of rebirth of the concept of allegory, thanks to the remarkable work of some critics (Benjamin, De Man, Jameson, Luperini). Each of them worked out his own hermeneutical strategy that, despite its peculiarity, detaches from the medieval one: the master code actually results perturbed , uncertain, sometimes even deleted.

The Department and the Graduate School of Literary, Linguistic and Philological Studies organize on December, 9th, 10th and 11th 2009 a congress with the aim to treat these issues from a theoretical point of view and/or by the mean of textual analysis of particularly significant works. It is also arranged the publication of a volume containing a choice of lecturers’ contributions.

Papers should cover a maximum of 25 minutes and concern (but aren’t limited to) the following topics:

- the development of the notion of allegory in the Middle-Age;
- the changing of the notion of allegory in Modernity;
- allegory and post-modernism;
- the relationship between symbol and allegory
- continuities and differences between medieval and modern allegory;
- textual analysis and reading of allegorical texts.

All the proposals will be peer-reviewed by a scientific committee. The committee will read all the proposals with great pleasure but is particularly interested in young researchers’, post-doc’s and graduate students’ proposals.
Proposals must not exceed 250 words and can be sent in Italian, English or French as PDF, DOC or RTF attachments. Please attach also a short (maximum 150 words) bio-bibliography of the submissor.

Lʼallegoria: teorie e forme tra medioevo e modernità

Per comprendere la letteratura occidentale quello di allegoria è un concetto cardine, si
tratti di testi medievali, dove lʼallegoria era istituzionalizzata nel sistema dei quattro livelli
ermeneutici del testo (letterale, morale, allegorico e anagogico), oppure di testi moderni
che spesso sono stati letti, almeno dalla lezione di Walter Benjamin in avanti, come testi
allegorici.

Tra le due fasi, medioevale e moderna, cʼè uno scarto forte nella sistemazione teorica
dellʼallegoria. Se nel medioevo essa era rigidamente codificata, sia che la si consideri
come figura retorica che come parte di un più generale iter ermeneutico che andava dal
testo al mondo, la modernità ha visto, dopo alcuni secoli in cui esso era caduto in disuso,
un risorgere del concetto di allegoria ad opera di alcuni studiosi (Benjamin, De Man,
Luperini, Jameson): ognuno di questi mette in atto una sua personale strategia
ermeneutica che, pur nella propria specificità, si distacca da quella medioevale in quanto il codice interpretativo dellʼallegoria risulta perturbato, incerto, talvolta cancellato.

La Scuola di dottorato e il dipartimento di Studi Letterari, Linguistici e Filologici
organizzano nei giorni 9-11 dicembre 2009 un convegno per trattare queste
problematiche da un punto di vista teorico e/o attraverso lʼanalisi di testi particolarmente
significativi. È prevista la pubblicazione di un volume con una scelta dei migliori interventi dei relatori.

Gli interventi, di massimo 25 minuti, riguarderanno tra lʼaltro, ma non solo:
- Lo sviluppo del concetto di allegoria nel medioevo
- Il concetto di allegoria nella modernità
- Lʼallegoria nella postmodernità
- Il rapporto tra simbolo e allegoria
- Continuità e differenze tra allegoria medioevale e moderna
- Letture allegoriche di opere letterarie

Le proposte verranno valutate da un comitato scientifico con il metodo del peer reviewing. Particolare attenzione sarà data ai giovani ricercatori, dottorandi o dottori di ricerca coinvolti in progetti post-dottorato.

Chi volesse partecipare è invitato a inviare un abstract della sua proposta di intervento,
della lunghezza massima di 1 cartella o 250 parole e una breve nota bio-bibliografica, sotto forma di allegato in formato PDF, DOC o RTF entro e non oltre il 7 agosto 2009 a
