CFP: [Cultural-Historical] "Literacy and Subjectivity" ASA 2009
I am seeking a third paper for a panel entitled “Literacy and
Subjectivity,†being proposed for next year’s American Studies Association
meeting. The 2009 conference theme is “Practices of Citizenship,
Sustainability, and Belonging.†The conference will be held November 5-8,
2009 in Washington D.C.
The experiences of ex-slaves, immigrants, children, and other potential
citizens have all collided with a vision of the United States as a nation
of readers. This panel approaches discourses of literacy not only in
relation to citizenship, but to the construction of individual selfhood
that makes national belonging possible. The papers on this panel will
examine the association between literacy and promises of economic and
social opportunity, looking at moments of apparent success as well as
stories of failure and exclusion.
To be considered for this panel, please submit an abstract of 500 words or
fewer and a one-page c.v. to literacypanel_at_gmail.com December 15, 2008.
