CFP- SWTXPCA-Special Topics-the Silent Films-Oscar Micheaux 2010full name / name of organization: Rob Weiner Texas Tech Univeristy contact email: rweiner5@sbcglobal.net CFP- SWTXPCA-Special Topics-the Silent Films-Oscar Micheaux Rweiner5@sbcglobal.net 31st Annual Conference February 10-13, 2010 The area chair for Silent Film is putting together a special panel on the films of Oscar Micheaux specifically his silent films in celebration of Black History Month for 2010. Oscar Micheaux was truly a groundbreaking African American Filmmaker who work stands as a testament to an independent do it yourself work ethic. He worked outside the Hollywood system in a time when that was extremely difficult to do. He also made some great movies including Within Our Gates, Body and Soul (with Paul Robeson), and Murder in Harlem. Oscar Micheaux hated typical moral filmic conventions of the time and tried to best them any way he could. We are proud to be able to put together a panel honoring this often overlooked innovator. We welcome any topic on the films and work of Oscar Micheaux. Information about our areas of study, conference travel, lodging, and the organization can be found on our regularly updated website: http://swtxpca.org/documents/home.html We look forward to seeing you this winter in sunny Albuquerque where we invite you to explore Route 66, local pueblos, hiking trails, museums, the Sandia and Isleta casinos, area ski resorts, and nearby Santa Fe. 31st Annual Conference February 10-13, 2010 cfp categories: african-american american cultural_studies_and_historical_approaches ethnicity_and_national_identity film_and_television gender_studies_and_sexuality twentieth_century_and_beyond
