Call for Papers: SF and the Introduction to Literature Course

A Panel for the SFRA 2006 37th Annual Conference WHEN GENRES COLLIDE

I seek three or four panelists to gather and present papers about the use of
science fiction (and/or fantasy) in Introduction to Literature courses.
These courses, sometimes the second course in a required English composition
sequence, sometimes a 200 or sophomore level course, frequently use academic
anthologies as reading material. More and more, these anthologies
incorporate fantasy and science fiction stories.

Essays that tie the work of our guests, Norman Spinrad, Nancy Kress, Nalo
Hopkinson, R. Garcia y Robertson, and William Sleator will receive
preference. While any essay that relates to the panel topic is of interest,
here are a few possible paper topics to help get those grey cells
percolating:

How do non-SF enthusiasts handle SF in intro to lit courses?

Do the supporting materials (discussion questions, etc.) for SF in academic
anthologies support that fiction as well as they support non-SF stories?

Do anthology editors ³get it?² when it comes to SF and/or selecting SF?

Teaching X (Spinrad, Kress, Hopkinson, Robertson, Sleator, or another SF/F/H
writer) at the intro to lit level (Pedagogy of teaching)

What SF can do that ³ordinary² literature can¹t (and/or the reverse)

Bridging the Divide between Realism and SF/F/H

Other ideas that link SF and introduction to literature courses eagerly
sought.

Send short proposals to Panel Chair Ed Carmien (carmien_at_mac.com) for
consideration. Get out those composition anthologies and cogitate!
