This panel for the 2010 ALA will focus on the increasing attention that scholars have been paying to Washington Irving’s conceptions of the American West. We are open to readings of the West that include but are not limited to Irving’s work in the 1830s. How, we might ask, do some of the later issues with expansion or land speculation reflect or refract Irving’s interests in his earlier works? How do they compare to similar work by his contemporaries? We especially encourage readings of other writers alongside or in conversation with Irving, especially writers like Bryant or Paulding who are among Irving’s literary circle.

Please send an abstract of no more than 300 words and an abbreviated CV to Christopher Apap (ccapap@hotmail.com) by January 3, 2010.
