CFP: Filipino Transnationality and U.S. Imperialism (1/6/06; ASA, 10/12/06-10/15/06)full name / name of organization: Martin Ponce contact email: ponce.8@osu.edu CFP for panel: Filipino Transnationality and U.S. Imperialism American Studies Association Annual Meeting As American Studies continues to examine the motivations, justifications, and domestic effects of U.S. imperialism, it becomes increasingly necessary to take into account the perspectives and reactions of those affected by these imperial acts. In the case of Filipinos, such an approach is all the more imperative given the century-long history of U.S. colonial and imperial intervention in the Philippines. This session seeks to gain a better understanding of Filipino transnationality by exploring the complex and ambivalent ways that Filipinos have viewed both the U.S. and the Philippines. How have Filipinos engaged with, reimagined, and transformed U.S. and Philippine cultures in their expressive and social practices? How have key historical events (such as the Philippine-American War, WWII, martial law, and post-1965 migration patterns) shaped these negotiations between national cultures?
