The 2nd International Joint-Symposium on “Ecology, Consumption, and Otherness” will be held on October 30-November 1, 2010 at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea. This Joint-Symposium, organized by both ASLE-Korea and ASLE-Japan, is designed to provide an interdisciplinary, intercultural, and Asian perspective forum for ecocritical readers to engage in rigorous and collaborative conversation around, this time, one of the most important and timely environmental concerns:

“What and how do we eat and what is the nature of the relationship between our dietary and environmental sustainability?”

For our Joint-Symposium, we invite proposals from scholars and graduate students that address any aspects of our thematic concern above; however, we also would like to welcome paper proposals on other environment-related topics, and proposals from all academic disciplines are welcomed as well.

Some of the subcategories of the symposium topic would be:
--consumption and East Asian traditions
--Buddhist and Taoist concepts of consumption
--global consumptive patterns and cultural hegemony/homogenization
--animals, Other, and ecocriticism
--the problematization of species
--environmental justice and indigenous/colonial foods w/ their environmental implications
--bioregionalism
--vegetarianism
--ethics and food
--the political organization of life and death
--postcolonial matters
-- biopolitics
--disease: BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy--a.k.a., Mad Cow Disease; H5N1--Bird Flu; sea lice--afflicting wild salmon from salmon farms; crop failure . . . and how these diseases are both environmental and social issues increasingly reflected in the cultural documents we produce
--reproductive technologies (and their discontents)
--GM foods
--water

TIMELINE FOR SUBMISSION

Paper proposals due May 15, 2010: Proposals should be no more than 250 words (approximately 1 page, double-spaced). Proposals must include a title, a statement of the problem or research question, a clear thesis, and a broad summary of the argument.

Full papers invited by July 30, 2010: A committee will review proposals and select those to be invited as full papers. All authors will be notified of the review results.
