Deadline extended to May 8.

This is a panel for the Renaissance Society of America conference in Montreal, March 2011. Presenters must be members of the RSA by the time of the conference.

The purpose of this panel is to explore poetry that represents repentance. Possible subjects include lyric poetry, devotional songs, paraphrases of the Penitential Psalms, and other versified material.

Questions to be considered might include, but are not limited to: Do penitential poems function as expressions of the author’s own penitence, or as scripts for the penitence of a reader? Does the wholeness and beauty of an artificial verse form interfere with the ostensible contrition of the speaker? Does the theology of the Reformation change the ways in which repentance is represented in verse?

Please email a title, 150 word abstract, and brief CV by May 8 to Chad Engbers, Calvin College: engbers@calvin.edu.
