LITERATURE IN THE EARLY AMERICAN REPUBLIC (LEAR), a peer-reviewed, scholarly, print annual published by AMS Press, welcomes a wide range of submissions on the literary culture of the United States from roughly the adoption of the Constitution in 1789 to the death of James Fenimore Cooper in 1851. We also seek submissions addressing (or establishing critical editions of) unpublished archival manuscripts (e.g., letters, diaries, poems, and other documents) of cultural or literary relevance to the period.

Please format essays in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style (15th edition), “short endnotes with full bibliography” method. Articles normally should run from 20-25 double-spaced, typewritten pages (or 7000-10,000 words). Longer submissions, such as editorial projects, will also be considered. As submissions undergo blind review by outside readers, the author’s name should appear only in the cover letter. We prefer electronic submissions (with files in MS Word).

The deadline for consideration in our fourth volume is 15 January 2011.

Send electronic submissions as MS Word attachments to sivils@iastate.edu
