The College English Association, a gathering of scholar-teachers in English studies, welcomes proposals for presentations for our 42nd annual conference.
Early America: Fortunes
Fortune is often defined as money, luck, friendship, health,or even a warm place to sleep. In a world staggered by economic decline and natural catastrophes, it is helpful to look at the past to understand our current conditions in 21st century America. What were the new boundaries of success, fortune, and even misfortune in colonial America? How did the representation of "fortune" change with the changes in print technologies, the revolution, and the birth of a new national identity? This panel seeks to examine representations of "Fortune" in early American literature before 1820.
