Conference Theme: Humanities in the Digital Age

Contemporary society is pervaded by the culture of computing, and digitization continues to create new processes and patterns. In My Mother Was a Computer, Katherine Hayles remarks,

As the worldview of code assumes comparable importance to the worldviews of speech and writing, the problematics of interaction between them grow more complex and entangled.

Given the increasing complexity of these worldviews, how do traditional forms adapt to new information ecosystems? Do humanities disciplines sufficiently address the problems of intermediation (interaction between worldviews of code, speech and writing)? How are the areas of research, teaching and writing affected by digitization?

WIU’s English Graduate Organization invites 200-300 word abstracts for papers, or complete panels, on any aspect of humanities in the digital age, broadly defined to encompass the common ground between information technology and issues in humanities research, writing and teaching. We welcome submissions for twenty-minute presentations, or complete panels, in any area of the humanities, particularly interdisciplinary work.
